WINE TASTING FROM POGGIO FOCO – ONE OF THE BEST ITALIAN PRODUCERS OF ORGANIC WINES

On 9th-11th May the WINE TIME clients in Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava and Chernihiv had a chance to learn the peculiarities of Poggio Foco organic wines production from the owner of the winery Franchesco Kovarik.

Fattoria Poggio Foco is situated in Maremma on the south of Toscana.

Poggio Foco winery was founded in 1977 by Bruno Kovarik but later was transformed by his sons to the organic farm. Today it occupies 1,359 acres, is surrounded by forests and located quite far from highways, settlements and industrial areas. The farm is a completely private organic system, with orientation on grain and olive trees growing, cheese and wine production. From all the variety of medicinal herbs in Toscana, 98% can be found in Poggio Foco. More than 700 sheep, 50 cows and 50 hogs can be found there as well.

On 123 acres of Poggio Foco vineyards such kinds of grape can be found: Sauvignon, Merlo, Alicante, Cabernet Fran and Sangiovese. All wines are produced in accordance with principles of organic winery, which are: cultivating grapes using only organic fertilizers and no chemical substances in the process of wine production. The result of this strategy is the high quality wines which fully reflect the peculiarities of Maremma terroir.

Franchesco Kovarik says that his vineyards are the organic symbiosis between soils, climate and plants of the area. It was proved on the tasting lecture of Cecco 2009 Sovana DOC, Secondo Me 2006 Sovana DOC and Sesa 2006 IGT Maremma.

This year it’s been the 12th visit of wine-makers. Continuing tasting traditions of wine-makers from all over the world, WINE TIME is planning to familiarize its clients with wines of Carlo Pellegrino (Italy), Waipara Springs (New Zeland) and Cave du Roi Dagobert (France), which will be represented by wine-makers themselves.
